Annual Slow Melody & Quartet Contest, 22nd June, 2019

The Elland Silver Band Slow Melody and Quartet Contest is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. To mark the occasion we are hosting a very special event. We’ve given our contest a makeover, and for this year the event will be held at Blackley Baptist, Elland. We are also introducing piano accompaniment and we will incorporate two new sections for percussionists.

The adjudicator for this year’s special event is internationally renowned cornetist Dr Roger Webster.

Over the years contestants have travelled from across the country to come and take part in the traditional contest to perform their unaccompanied Slow Melody. Traditionally, a “Slow Melody” is a song, aria or ballad to illustrate the performers lyrical ability and tonal quality. Examples of a traditional slow melody are:

The Lost Chord The Holy City
Softly Awakes My Heart Rusalka’s Song to the Moon
The Flower Song The Star of Bethlehem
Nirvana Bless This House
Abide with Me Sunshine of Your Smile
The Iceberg Lend Me Your Aid

The competition includes 5 Slow Melody Sections, 2 Duet Sections and 2 Quartet Sections. Annual trophies are awarded to the winners of each category plus 2nd and 3rd prize winners receive a keep sake trophy, depending on the number of entries per class. We also have novice sections for first time entrants.
