Open Night is a Success - April 2011 |
On Friday 8th April, we held
our first "Open Night" to welcome new members to the band. Posters
were displayed around the area and in local schools. Six children cam
along with their parents to listen to the band and to try out an instrument.
Smanatha Harrison led the training band in a master class to parents,
explaining the sounds of the band and how the instruments fits together.
The band demonstrated their skills to the new recruits. The new players
were then givien the opportunity to choose an instrument to play. We look
forward to seeing the new children. |
Training band performs at Music for Youth - March 2011 |
The training band is our foundation band where we encourage and develop players to reach the standard required by the youth band. The Music for Youth festival provides an ideal opportunity for the training band to perform. Musical groups are encouraged to perform to an audience of participants, parents and music mentors. Our Training Band gave a very creditable performance, displaying the abilities of our young brass players. For several of our young players it was their first time performing in public. The band took to the stage with confidence and performed their programme to the best of their ability. Our feedback from the music mentors was really encouraging. |
Promotions to the Youth Band - September 2010 |
Congratulations to George
Scoley and Joshua Barber on their promotion to the Youth Band. George
will join the youth band on 3rd Cornet and Joshua will join on 2nd Trombone.
We hope you have an enjoyable time in the youth band. Well done. |
New Principal Cornet Player - January 2011 |
We are pleased to announce
the Training Band has a new leader. We congratulate Bethan Plant on her
promotion to the senior band. Bethan has decided to take up the position
of 3rd Cornet with the senior band. With the extra rehearsals and commitment
required by the senior band Bethan has decided to leave the training band.
This makes way for a new principal cornet player to lead the band. Emily
Armitage aged 10 will take over from Bethan. We wish Emily and Bethan
good luck in their new positions and hope they enjoy their new responsibilities. |
Band named as "Most Promising Youth Band" - 1st October 2005 |
The Training band took part in the Huddersfield Association Annual Youth Contest. The band was drawn fisrt out of a total of 6 bands and gave a superb performance of their chosen programme and delighted the audience and adjudicator. The judge was Mr Barry Thompson and his remarks on the performance were really encouraging. He awarded the band joint 4th place and selected the band as the "most promising youth band" and £30.00. The last time the band took part in a competition was 2 years ago, most of these players have now moved into the Youth Band. |
Christmas Concerts - December 2005 |
The training band performed two excellent concerts over the christmas period. The first concert was at Longroyd Primary School's Craft Fair in Rastrick. The band performed several pieces of music including the popular "Gospel Rock" and several new pieces. The bands second performance was at the annual christmas concert in All Saints Church, Elland. The training band opened the concert, playing to a crowd of some 300 supporters, including the Mayor of Halifax. The beginners class also took part and played two christmas carols. |
New Members |
10 new members have started to learn to play since July and we have a new beginners class. 5 children have started to learn to play the cornet, 2 on Eb Horn, 1 on Euphonium and 1 on Baritone. This increases membership of the Training band to over 30 players. |
CD Recording |
| In October, the training band were invited by the senior band to record some pieces for the bands first ever CD. The band chose to record some of its favourite pieces and practiced them really hard to get them right. On the day of the recording everyone arrived very early, and looked really nervous. The recording engineer was really helpful and explained how important it was to play all the right notes and to be really quite at the start and end of each piece. There were lots of microphones and wires to pick up the sounds. It took 3 hours to record all of the music, and we had to play some pieces more than once to make them sound really good. The band played really well and Mike said we sounded great! |
Our first Competition |
| Sunday 19th October 2003 we took part in our first competiton at Rastrick High School on . We played 3 pieces which included a March, "Pots and Pans, a Hymn Tune "Kum Bah Yah" and one of our favourite pieces "Gospel Rock". We played really well, and we were placed joint 6th out of 9 bands. Our youngest member, Ashely aged 6 was awarded a trophy for being the youngest competitor. |
